Spooky.....

Our Thomas Tompion clock has stopped, it stopped in November, not sure of the date.  Today Toby Birch of Montpellier Clocks, Cheltenham came out to diagnose the problem.

Toby said, “When did it stop?”

“November, not sure when”.

“Oh spooky - Thomas Tompion died November 20th 1713”.

Almost exactly 300 years to the day....

Friends Projects - Cannon Carriages

As a Friend of Berkeley Castle you help support the repair of the building and its unique contents and help to safeguard them for the enjoyment of future generations.

Members of the Friends of Berkeley Castle assist Berkeley Castle Charitable Trust, which is dedicated to the "preservation, conservation and restoration, for the public benefit, of Berkeley Castle, its contents and its gardens".

One of this year's Friends' projects was to have cannon carriages made.  Two have been made already, using oak from the Castle Estate, and can be seen at the Castle.  We were so pleased with the results that a further two carriages have been ordered.

An Eventful Year

December is nearly upon us and 2013 will soon be history.....

.....but it was a very eventful year for the Friends - or rather a year full of events.

There have been many highlights, from Dr Stuart Prior's talk about the archeological dig, to the visit to Madresfield, not forgetting the entertaining talk about the Battle of Flodden and most recently, our ever popular Quiz Night and talk from Castle Archivist David Smith.

2013 will be a tough act to follow, but your committee is already planning an equally full programme of events for 2014 - keep an eye on the Friends' "What's On" page for details.
